A temporary measure to restore your smile with same day dentures
We understand having teeth extracted can be a troublesome and worrying ordeal: How will you look afterwards? Will eating and talking be difficult? What will your recovery include? But with immediate dentures, many of these fears can be alleviated. Immediate dentures are also called same day dentures because they can replace extracted teeth immediately following dental surgery. Before any teeth are extracted, your denturist and dentist work together closely to create the right immediate denture for you to wear after surgery. You’ll wear your same day dentures throughout your healing process as your mouth adjusts and swelling subsides. It’s incredibly important to get the right immediate dentures during your recovery because you could be wearing them for several months as you heal. Once you’re healed, most patients replace their immediate denture with a permanent option.
As with any surgery, you’ll want to plan and prepare ahead of time to ensure a comfortable and quick recovery. With all of the right information on hand, you’ll also have peace of mind as you manage post-surgical changes. Your road to recovery can be an easier ride with the right immediate dentures, crafted by the right denturist.
Post Operative Instructions and Care
- 24 hours after tooth extractions, remove and clean dentures with a denture cleaner.
- Rinse your mouth with warm (salt water) solution to promote healing.
- Expect some level of swelling and discomfort.
- Take medication if any has been prescribed.
- Eat a high calorie, soft diet with foods that are easy to eat.
- It takes 1-6 weeks for your extraction sites to heal enough to allow for the placement of a temporary liner known as a “tissue conditioner.”
- A permanent reline can be done once the tissue has completely healed, which can take anywhere from six months to a year. Please note, this service is not included in the cost of the denture.
Q&A
Are immediate dentures permanent?
This depends on your treatment plan and the specific course established for your case.
Depending on your oral condition, a temporary denture could be used during healing. Most often, this is followed by the fabrication of your permanent denture.
How long do you keep immediate dentures in?
After tooth extraction, it’s recommended that you keep your immediate dentures in for the first 24-48 hours. At your post-extraction appointment, we’ll assess the fit and your bite. We’ll also remove your denture to check for healing and any sore areas. For the first few weeks, dentures should be worn continuously, only removing them for cleaning.
How much do same day dentures cost?
The price of your same-day dentures will depend on your particular case. The best way to determine a specific detailed cost is to book a free, no-obligation consultation at Toronto Denture Centre.
How long does it take to get immediate dentures?
The process for getting immediate dentures will depend on a few factors. First, we will need to coordinate your extractions with a dentist–either your family dentist, one of our referral dentists or an oral surgeon. Then, a few appointments are required before your tooth extraction. Next, you’ll pick up your denture for the extraction appointment and, finally, attend a few follow-up appointments to make sure the immediate denture fits well.
Can you eat with immediate dentures?
Yes, but remember your first attempts at eating might feel awkward. To help make the process easier, stick to soft foods at first. Over time, you can begin to experiment with more challenging foods, but remember to cut them into small pieces and chew well. Even as you become more confident with your new denture, particularly sticky, hard, or chewy foods may still be difficult to manage.
Can I get my dentures and tooth extraction on the same day?
Yes, in 90%+ of cases, this is possible, as long as proper molds and jaw measurements can be taken. Keep in mind, this also depends on your health history.
